The JMM-led alliance’s MLAs have unanimously elected Mr. Hemant Soren to lead them. In connection with a money laundering investigation, he was set free on bond on June 28. The JMM has been charged by the BJP with engaging in dynastic politics.

“Sources claim that Champai Soren will step down and Hemant Soren will take back his position as Jharkhand’s chief minister. The state’s government and future course are expected to be impacted by this momentous political development.

Background of Hemant Soren’s Resignation

The Jharkhand State On July 3, the ruling Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (India) Bloc parties elected Hemant Soren, the former chief minister and head of Mukti Morcha (JMM), to lead them. To assert his claim to create the state government, he later met with the governor. Jharkhand’s 13th Chief Minister, Hemant Soren, is expected to make a comeback.

He was sentenced to jail earlier this year in connection with an alleged land scam case, which led to his resignation as Chief Minister in January. Champai Soren, the outgoing chief minister, said to the reporters outside Raj Bhavan, “We, the alliance, have chosen Hemant Babu (Hemant Soren) to be our leader. I am leaving my place of employment voluntarily.” Following Champai Soren’s resignation to Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, Hemant Soren declared his intention to form the administration.

Hemant Soren arrived in Ranchi on July 3rd evening and visited the governor and leaders of the alliance parties. On July 4th, Hemant Soren is rumored to be invited by the governor to become the state’s thirteenth chief minister.

Alliance Gathering and Agreement

A lengthy meeting was held in Ranchi earlier in the day by State Congress President Rajesh Thakur, Congress party state in-charge Ghulam Ahmed Mir, Chief Minister Champai Soren, and legislators from all affiliated parties. The MLAs of the ruling alliance came to an agreement regarding the shift in leadership, and Hemant Soren was appointed Chief Minister once more. In Ranchi, local media quoted Jamtara Congress MLA Irfan Ansari as saying, “The meeting decided that Hemant Soren will be the Chief Minister again.”

Reason For Hemant Soren Arrest

Hemant Soren was taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on January 31st about a money laundering case connected to an alleged land fraud.

Over the phone with The Hindu, a JMM MLA who wished to remain anonymously stated, “Yes, we want Mr. Soren to take the oath as the state’s CM as soon as possible, but it all depends on the Governor’s invitation.” He was appointed Chief Minister of Jharkhand twice, in July 2013 and December 2019. This will be his third time taking the oath of office.

This was the first time Hemant Soren summoned an all-party gathering of MLAs from coalition partners since his return from jail on June 28. Champai Soren, the current chief minister, may be given a new role as the working president of JMM or as the head of the India Bloc Coordination Committee in the state. Champai Soren was apparently “upset” by this proposal, although he later disputed it.

The JMM-led India Bloc now has 47 members in the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly, up from 45 after the latest Lok Sabha elections (JMM-27, Congress-17, and RJD-1). With two of its MLAs, Dhullu Mahto (Baghmara in Dhanbad) and Manish Jaiswal (Hazaribagh), being elected as MPs, the BJP now has 24 members in the state assembly.

Family Involvement in Politics

Following his release from jail, Kalpana Soren, Hemant’s wife, entered politics and rose to the position of party MLA, representing the Gandey Assembly constituency. In a by-election, she prevailed over BJP contender Dilip Kumar Verma by a margin of more than 26,000. Following JMM MLA Sarfaraz Ahmed’s resignation, the Gandey Assembly seat in the Giridih district became vacant.

Hemant Soren had a brief meeting with the AICC General Secretary and party’s Jharkhand in-charge, Ghulam Ahmed Mir, and State Congress President Rajesh Thakur on Wednesday before the alliance MLAs’ meeting. A leader of the JMM stated, “The alliance MLAs and leaders have chosen Hemant Soren for a third term as CM to ensure unified command ahead of the upcoming state elections in October this year.”

Reactions and Political Commentary

On June 28th, Hemant Soren was granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court, which stated that there was no sufficient reason to believe he was guilty of the crime, allowing him to be released from jail.

In response to Hemant Soren’s reappointment as Chief Minister, Sita Soren—his sister-in-law—who had joined the BJP before the Lok Sabha elections and had unsuccessfully run for the Dumka seat—fired Champai Soren. She joked, “Changing the face of the CM won’t make a difference.” A BJP spokesman, Vinay Singh, stated earlier: “It is evident that once dynastic, always dynastic. Champai Soren’s brief takeover of power was a charade to look democratic. The Shibu Soren family, though, will never permit power to leave the family.”
